Each year, the HOBY Minnesota Board of Directors + Seminar Leadership Team work to provide a 3-day seminar experience that challenges and empowers students to leverage their leadership abilities for greater good. Without all of the hard work, dedication, and donations from our volunteers this life-changing experience wouldn't be possible.

2024 Volunteer Opportunities

  • The Leadership Seminar Treasurer maintains the budget and supervises all expenses incurred at the Minnesota Leadership Seminar. Individuals in this role are responsible for completing regular data entry, projecting/tracking our Leadership Seminar expenses, and generating financial reports. You will also work collaboratively with the Leadership Semiar Chair, Vice Chair, and Director of Fundraising to develop operating budgets for the upcoming seminar.

    Time commitments for this role are approximately 2-4 hours of data entry/report building per month from November 2023 through July 2023 with increased hours in March-May leading up to Seminar weekend. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend.

    Preferred qualifications include those with experience using microsoft outlook, strong attention to detail and data management, and willing to work as a team. Individuals in this role must be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • The Director of Community Service is responsible for one of the most crucial parts of Leadership Seminar. This roles works directly with the Director of Program to integrate the required Leadership for Service components into the seminar schedule, including the community service project conducted at the local state seminar.

    Time Commitments in this role include approximately 2-3 hours of Leadership Seminar preparation per month from November 2023 through May 2024 with increased hours in March - May until the start of the Leadership Semiarn. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend to ensure all requirements are met.

    Preferred qualifications for this role are individuals who are well connected to our local community and can generate fun/unique ideas to engage/captivate our ambassadors inspiring them to a life of service in their communities. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The Director of Fundraising creates a budget and a comprehensive fundraising plan for the seminar, listing all potential sources for funding including corporations, service and cooperating organizations, and gift-in-kind contributions. At the completion of the fundraising efforts, the committee should have generated funds of at least 5% in excess of expenditures. You will also work collaboratively with the Leadership Semiar Chair, Vice Chair, and Director of Finance to develop fundraising plans for the upcoming seminar.

    Time commitments for this role are approximately 2-4 hours of data entry/report building per month from November 2023 through July 2023 with increased hours in March-May leading up to Seminar weekend. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend.

    Preferred qualifications include those with experience using microsoft outlook, strong attention to detail and data management, and willing to work as a team. Individuals in this role must be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • The Director of Programs is responsible for selecting speakers from prominent business and community leaders, and organizing the seminar’s schedule of events to include all required curriculum elements. This role will work closely with the Director of Operations to generate a detailed understanding of staff/materials needed at each stage of the Leadership Seminar event.

    Time Commitment involves approximately 3-5 hours per month from November 2023 through July 2024 with increased hours in March-May leading up to Seminar weekend. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend.

    Preferred Qualifications include experience leading teams and coaching or mentoring others. Teaching experience in any capacity, whether through designing curriculum, giving instruction, etc. and comfortability with public speaking and facilitation. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The Director of Service and Cooperating Organizations provides assistance in soliciting local clubs/chapters for financial support or student sponsored recruitments, maintains volunteer resources, and other involvement with the seminar. This individual works collaboratively witht he Director of Recruitment/Ambassador Relations, the Director of Marketing/PR, as well as any Alumni Committees we may maintain.

    Time Commitment involves approximately 2-3 hours per month from November 2023 through July 2024 with increased hours in March-May leading up to Seminar weekend. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend.

    Preferred Qualifications include experience leading teams and coaching or mentoring others. Strong written and verbal communication skills, community engagement skills, and data management skills. Individuals in this role must be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • The Director of Special Services is responsible for any special services as assigned. These might include securing gift-in-kind contributions, conducting student check-in at the seminar, maintain HOBY store during leadership seminar weekend, organizing optional religious services, conducting thank you letter writing, arranging for health wellbeing procedures to be followed, or other tasks as assigned

    Time Commitment involves approximately 2-3 hours per month from November 2023 through July 2024 with increased hours in March-May leading up to Seminar weekend. You will be expected to attend regular Leadership Seminar planning meetings involving the Leadership Seminar Staff with meeting times increasing closer to local leadership seminar weekend.

    Preferred Qualifications include experience leading teams and coaching or mentoring others. Strong written and verbal communication skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to adapt to new situations/tasks. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • Facilitators directly oversee a small group of ambassadors during the Leadership Seminar weekend and facilitate their learning. They are a vital part of the HOBY Leadershp Seminar experience being the leaders of ambassador groups supervising them on campus during group times, section time, transitions, meal times, and during program engagement. You will be their first interaction upon arrival at Seminar weekend and continue to lead them throughout the weekend encouraging group interaction on seminar topics and proper courtesy to speakers. Facilitators will also be expected to assist in fundraising measures leading up to Seminar.

    Time Commitments of a Facilitator are approximately 2-5 hours per month from March 2023 through June 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. You are expected to attend two training sessions before the start of seminar. Additional meetings may be scheduled by the Director of Facilitators.

    Preferred Qualifications include, but are not limited to, facilitation experiences at a HOBY State Seminar or other leadership camps/conferences. You must also have excellent communication skills, critical thinking skills, and demonstrated conflict resolution skills. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The Junior Staff (JStaff) Volunteers assist with seemless transitions during the Leadership Seminar activities, program execution, seminar operations, and keeping the overall attitude and enviroment positive. JStaff are the life and energy of the seminar weekend helping us to keep energized and having fun. This role supports the directors and managers in executing key operational movements and tasks including set up/tear down and transitions. They work cross-funtionally to support Program, Operations, and Ambassador Experience teams. You will lead ambassador cheers/energizers and serve as peer mentors/models for ambassadors.

    Time commitments of JStaff are approximately 2-5 hours per month from March 2023 through June 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. You are expected to attend two training sessions before the start of seminar. Additional meetings may be scheduled by the Director of Junior Staff.

    Preferred qualifications include demonstrating maturity in school, volunteer, HOBY, or professional environments, strong organizational and communication skills. Must be a strong multitasker. Individuals in this role must be aged 16 to 20.

  • The Master of Ceremonies (MC) works directly under the Director of Operations and collaboratively with the Director of Programs helping to ensure seamless transitions between events throughout Leadership Seminar weekend. Individuals in this role will introduce upcoming speakers, announce items on the agenda, collaborate on cheers with the Director of Junior Staff, and recognize sponsors (if applicable). You must be able to provide each of these tasks in a timely manner to keep the event moving at a steady pace.

    Time commitment in this role is approximately 2-3 hours monthly from March 2024 through June 2024 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. You are expected to attend touch base meeting with the Director of Operations, Director of Programs, and Director of Community Service.

    Preferred qualifications include having a friendly disposition, ad-lib skills, and ability to put people at ease. You must be a strong communicator, public speaking skills, time management skills, and hold a formal, business like image. Individuals in this role must be at least 18 years of age or older.

  • The Inventory Specialist works directly under the Director of Operations to manage and organize/disburse all materials/supplies for the Leadership Seminar weekend including the HOBY Store items, activities supplies, and more. You will also be expected to collaborate with the Director of Special Services, if applicable. Individuals in this role will track inventory of all supplies, items, and materials and then generate a post-seminar inventory. We also ask that you work with the Director of Marketing & PR to ensure proper merchandise is ordered and in proper sizes/quantities.

    Time commitment in this role varies depending upon leadership roles assigned. Estimate working 5 hours per month in preparation for Leadership Seminar from January 2023 through July 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. You are expected to attend two follow up meetings before the start of seminar.

    Preferred qualifications for this role include supply/inventory management experience in volunteer, HOBY, or professional environments. Applicants must have basic skills in Excel or other data management software. You must have strong communication skills, organizing skills, and multitasking skills. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The Counselor or Psychologist at Leadership Seminar directly supports the efforts of the specialty services and medics of the wellness team as well as coordinate with the leadership team to support all mental wellness spaces and needs at Leadership Seminar. You are responsible for managment of mental wellness areas/supplies onsite including quiet room and/or sensory rooms. You will work in tandem with other wellness teams members to support the safety and emergency preparedness of Seminar in relation to mental wellness including providing a training/education to all volunteers in HOBY mental crisis response protocols and/or mandatory reporting protocols. We ask that you would analyze mental wellness needs at the micro and macro levels to anticipate individual, group, and community needs when applicable.

    Time Commitments in this role are approximately 4-5 hours per month from March 2023 through June 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. This includes attending meetings with the Director of Special Services and Director of Operations, providing trainings, and completing further research if applicable.

    Preferred qualifications are you must be a qualified mental wellness professional and provide proof of credentials. You must have strong communication skills, basic skills in Excel and data management, and the ability to deliver culturally sensitive care. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The Nurse or Medic at Leadership Seminar directly supports the efforts of the specialty services and counselors/psychologist of the wellness team as well as coordinate with the leadership team to plan/prepare for all medical needs of the ambassadors and staff at Leadership Seminar. You are responsible for managment of medical wellness areas/supplies onsite including sick bays and/or quarantine rooms and over the counter medication dispersal. Individuals in this role work in tandem with other wellness team members and other staff ensuring protocols for safety and emergency preparedness at Leadership Seminar. You are asked to supervise ambassadors / participants as they take their medications and/or need medical support/intervention. You will be required to provide education/training to all volunteers on HOBY medical emergency response protocols.

    Time Commitments in this role are approximately 4-5 hours per month from March 2023 through June 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. This includes attending meetings with the Director of Special Services and Director of Operations, providing trainings, and completing further research if applicable.

    Preferred qualifications are you must be a certified EMT or equivalent emergency medicine professional and be able to provide proof of credentials. Must have strong communication skills, basic skills in Excel and data management, and ability to deliver culturally sensitive care. Individuals in this role must be at least 21 years of age or older.

  • The photographer/volunteer reports directly to the Director of Marketing & PR and assists in photographing/videotaping activities throughout Leadership Seminar weekend captivating the ambassadors experiences. Images captured will be provided to all ambassadors upon request along with utilized in our marketing materials/efforts going forward. You must be willing to capture still frames, action frames, indoor frames, outdoor frames, interview style recordings, and others as assigned. Individuals in this role must supply their own equipment.

    Time commitments in this role are approximately 2-3 hours per month from March 2023 through June 2023 with increased hours near the start of the Seminar weekend. This includes attending meetings with the Director of Marketing & PR to anticipate expected shots to take.

    Preferred qualifications include knowledge and skills with photography and/or video equipment, including editing software. Must possess a knowledge of computers and demonstrate strong communication skills. Individuals in this role must be at least 18 years of age or older.
